Barney Walsh

Major: Chemistry

Barney is a rising senior at Kalamzoo College, and came to Penn State in the summer of 2021 as part of our REU program, where he joined the Elacqua group's efforts in polymer-based photoredox catalyst design. Prior to this, Barney conducted research with Dr. Blakely Tresca where he endeavored to 3D print photoreactors for the organic chemistry teaching lab to introduce principles of photoredox-catalyzed reactions. He also currently conducts inorganic chemistry research with Dr. Daniela Arias-Rotondo, where he has synthesized ligands for future coordination to metal centers and subsequent investigations of their photophysics. Outside of the lab, Barney enjoys hiking, trying to cook, and practicing diabolo. After graduating from K'Zoo, Barney is focused on attending graduate school where he tentatively aims to pursue inorganic chemistry, with a focus on alternative energies/fuels.
